Miss Sheri’s Cafeteria Caters To ‘Smart’ Clientele

By Betsy Zatkulak

These days, cafeteria-style restaurants are few and far between, but it appears that Miss Sheri’s Cafeteria in Warson Woods is in business for the long haul. Ronald Amann, owner and patriarch of Miss Sheri’s, has no plans to alter his recipe for success – providing only high quality, value-priced meals with warm and courteous service to what has proved to be a very loyal clientele.

For 34 years, Amann has owned and operated a number of cafeterias, and that is nothing to shake a fork at. He knows the business.

“For as long as I can remember, cafeterias have always tried to gain the younger generation, but the elderly have always been the bulk of the clientele, and they’re smart,” Amann said.

Apparently, they also know what they like: Several of Amann’s customers dine at Miss Sheri’s three to six evenings a week.

“They want a well-balanced meal, and they can see what they’re buying because it’s right there in front of them,” Amann said.

Open daily for lunch and for dinner, Miss Sheri’s’ home-style menu changes daily and features a host of entrees, daily specials, fresh-baked breads, salads and a surprising selection of vegetables, some of which are steamed. Baked pork chops, turkey and dressing, filet of cod, and daily specials like Swiss steak rank high on the customer-favorite list, but those looking for lighter options will find them in the form of grilled trout, baked cod, baked orange roughy and other healthful entrees. All entrees are served with two vegetables, bread and butter, but Miss Sheri’s’ regulars learned long ago to save room for dessert.

“Probably our biggest feature is the fact that we’ve always baked all of our pastries, pies, cakes and breads from scratch; that’s something we’ve continued to do over the years,” Amann said.

The dining area at Miss Sheri’s is spacious and inviting with plenty of tables and booths to accommodate tables of one, two or 20. The décor is tasteful, warm and welcoming.

Amann, who owns the cafeteria with his wife, Dodie, is quick to credit his staff - which includes his son and general manager, Jeff Amann, and Chef Clarence, who has been cooking for Miss Sheri’s for 25 years – for the smooth operation of his business. The Amman’s daughter, Lauri Miller, is the cafeteria’s office manager, and their youngest daughter, Sheri, for whom the business is named, co-manages Miss Sheri’s Cafeteria in Concord Village with her husband, Brian.

“We’re here and we plan to be here a long time,” Amann said. “We have five of our 10 grandchildren that work in the business, so there will be future generations.”
