Sarah’s Café Is Three Times A CharmBy Tricia Herries
“I just enjoy making food and making people happy through food,” owner Jill Umbarger said. Sarah’s Café is a triple-threat in the culinary industry: Umbarger and her staff work to make every party one to remember with their catering services, turn baked goods into more than just a sweet thought and tempt the taste buds with a vast cafe menu that would suit most any appetite. The catering service, Umbarger’s favorite aspect of the business, handles breakfasts, lunches, meetings, events and at-home parties from groups of 10 to 300. Clients are not limited to any one type of fare, thanks to the varied backgrounds and talents of Umbarger’s staff. “I surround myself with people who enjoy doing this as much as I do,” Umbarger said, and clients agree. “[Clients] always come back saying that they can tell we take pride in what we do,” Tony Rudolph, catering manger, said. “We are always on time with smiles on our faces and have the food ready to go at the time the client would like.” Above all. Rudolph promises, “We are going to make sure that we bring out is going to be our best.” With the slogan, “The company is the difference,” the café’s wedding cake business is a large part of Sarah’s Café’s bakery, which recently expanded into its own production kitchen to meet the ever-growing demand of orders. Umbarger is rightfully proud of her cakes and the fact they are truly unique. “We do a lot of fondant work, and our butter cream is out of this world,” she said. Much like designing a catering menu, Umbarger listens to each client to create the cake they envision. The bakery is not limited to wedding cakes; Sarah’s Cafe specializes also in custom cakes, cookies and cupcakes that make any occasion special. The café itself is open Monday through Saturday for breakfast and lunch and remains open till 8 p.m. on Wednesdays for the dinner crowd. Soon, dinner options will expand. Umbarger plans to implement grab-and-go items for quick dinner fixes. The café’s atmosphere is relaxed, but it is not a fast-food establishment. Umbarger said she would rather have orders take longer to ensure that the food tastes good, is of the best quality and is fresh. “We cook a lot from scratch,” she said. How does Umbarger manage such a complex business and still keep her sights set on growth? “I do a lot of multi-tasking, and I am very blessed with the people I have working with me,” she said.
