Culpeppers Follows Recipe For SuccessBy Betsy Zatkulak
When Culpeppers opened its first location back in 1935 at the corner of Euclid and Maryland in the Central West End neighborhood, who knew it would become a landmark destination for award-winning food? Now boasting eight locations throughout greater St. Louis and a truly dedicated team that enjoys working together to create fun and tasty experiences for guests, Culpeppers’ recipe for success just might last another 70 years.
“We really pride ourselves on great food and great service, and when you come in we expect you to walk out 110 percent happy,” Jesse Schulte, the company’s marketing manager, said. Culpeppers also is dedicated to giving back to the community that has supported it through the years. During its recent grand re-opening celebration, $88,000 was raised for Youth in Need, a local organization to benefit children who face adversity. To ensure continued customer satisfaction, the restaurant’s tried-and-true specialties (those World Famous Chicken Wings and the Culpeppers Burger with its tantalizing garlic cream sauce, for example) are complemented by an extended menu that includes St. Louis Style Pizza and additional American classics, plus some “limited-time-only” menus that highlight adventurous flavors such as Cajun, Caribbean and Southwest and appeal to new and regular customers alike. “We’re also planning to do Pan-Asian, which is a new, upcoming trend that most restaurants seem to be incorporating into their menus,” Schulte said. The latest limited-time-only menu features six creative salads, including the Baby Bleu, Southwestern Caesar, and the Tostada, which is topped with Culpeppers’ original fiesta ranch dressing, fresh lime and sour cream. Serving appetizers, salads, homemade soups, sandwiches, juicy burgers, steaks, ribs, seafood and chicken dishes, thin-crust pizzas, daily lunch and dinner specials, a kids’ menu and a full bar offering happy hour drink specials from 4 p.m. until closing every day, Culpeppers, offers something for every appetite. Almost every item on the updated menu is free of trans fat, including the French fries and, yes, even the chicken wings. The décor at most Culpeppers restaurants also has been treated to a makeover to create a fun, relaxed space. Outside dining is available at all locations, and some even offer “couch-side” service, delivering any items on the menu. When the occasion calls for feeding a crowd, Culpeppers can fill the bill on site in its banquet rooms or prepare generous party platters that are ideal for graduations, company picnics, tailgate parties, business meetings and showers. “Everybody’s always very willing to help out to make every event the most successful event they possibly can,” Schulte said. “Some restaurants are real fast-paced and want to get you in and out of there. We just want you to come in and relax and enjoy.” Culpeppers Offering eight convenient locations, including:
